WEB FORUMS:

These web forums are great resources for DIY instrument builds and maintenance

"This site is completely dedicated to teaching as well as showing where you can go to get specialty supplies or services to complete your unique project. I also hope this site helps to inspire those few that are looking for a group of people to hang out with on the Internet and have fun making one of a kind guitars as well as giving them an outlet to show off their own creations."

Instructions, references, submitter gallery, and an extensive forum makes this one of the best sites on the net for guitar builders. We are sure that even after a short visit to Project Guitar, you'll understand why we recommend and it!

"GuitarAttack, the site for aspiring guitar builders and repairers who are trying to learn more about the trade.  We are also here to help guitar players adjust and repair their own guitars.  Most important, please don't forget that guitars are made for playing!"

Builder's gallery, repair techniques, playing techniques, and a full topic forum make Guitarattack a veritable one-stop-shop for guitar enthusiasts. Be sure to check out the beautiful Daphne Blue Saga TC-10 Tele build from DIY Guitar Shop customer Peter Bower in the Saga Sagas Section

Guitar Gallery, Discussion Board, and the incredible finishing and refinishing techniques in ReRanch 101 make ReRanch one of our first stops. The discussion board features a good number of professional builders and luthiers who contribute and share their experience and expertise. Certainly one of the best sources for DIY finishing information, including wood prep, colour, and sanding. Great customer gallery with some incredible new and restoration work. Unbelievable selection of Fender and Gibson colour lacquers in aerosols. Sadly, no shipping outside of US.

FINISHING SUPPLIES:

We've found the following suppliers who offer great products for prep and finishing

Great source for clear, tinted, and coloured nitrocellulose lacquers, and high-solids sanding sealer in convenient aerosol cans. They also stock high quality anilyne dyes, stains, and traditional hand rubbed finishing supplies like French Polish. We have used and recommend their Grain Fillers, Musical Instrument Lacquer,s and Jet Spray and Master Aerosol Lacquers. (Mailorder)
Makers of a wide range of wood prep and finishing products. We highly recommend their Seal Coat Universal Sanding Sealer, which is a wax-free shellac and is compatible with ALL clear and tinted finishes, and B-I-N Pigmented Shellac Primer Sealer, which also is compatible with all solid finishes including nitro and acrylic lacquers. Zinsser products are a mainstay in our shop! (Available locally)
Manufacturers of a wide range of finishing materials including water-based clear and tinted poly varnishes which are great for use on necks! If you're after a neck look similar to amber tinted nitro, look at their Light Oak or English Pine! (Available locally)
A wide range of wood prep and wood finishing materials. We have used Rustin's wood dyes and poly and found them to be quite good, especially Ebony. Also the manufacturer of Rustin's Plastic Coating, used by many guitar builders for its tough, hi-gloss finish. (Available locally)
In addition to offering power tools and shop equipment, they are a stockist of many of the finishing products listed above, as well as a wide selection of sand papers, steel wool, and other essentials. Also check out their paint guns and airbrush equipment. (Mailorder)
